Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Dual N-Back.

Dual N-Back is a scientifically-validated cognitive training task that targets working memory. During the game, you're presented with two simultaneous streams of stimuli: a visual element (a square appearing on a grid) and an audio element (a letter or sound).

Your task is to identify when either stimulus matches what appeared "N" steps back in the sequence. For example, in 2-back, you're checking if the current position or sound matches what happened 2 trials ago.

Research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that consistent Dual N-Back training can improve fluid intelligence—the ability to reason and solve new problems—as well as working memory capacity.

Here's how to play:

  • Watch and Listen: A square will appear on the grid while a sound plays simultaneously.
  • Remember: Keep track of positions and sounds from N steps back.
  • Respond: Tap the Position button if the current position matches N steps back. Tap the Sound button if the current sound matches N steps back. You can tap both if both match!
  • Progress: Score well to advance to higher N-levels and increase the challenge.

Start with 1-back or 2-back to get comfortable with the mechanics, then gradually increase as you improve.

  • Classic: The standard Dual N-Back experience with fixed parameters. Great for consistent training and tracking progress.
  • Freeplay: Practice mode without affecting your stats. Perfect for experimenting with settings.
  • Acceleration: The interval between stimuli decreases as you play, testing your speed and reflexes.
  • Rhythm Roulette: Random intervals keep you alert and prevent falling into predictable patterns.
  • Backflip: The N-level changes dynamically during play, challenging your cognitive flexibility.
  • Shuffle: Audio stimuli switch randomly between piano notes and letter sounds, forcing you to adapt.
  • Combo: Get 6 consecutive correct matches to complete the game. The ultimate test of focus and consistency.

Your score rewards consistent, accurate play and is calculated based on several factors:

  • Base Score: You start with 5 points per correct match for each stimulus type you have enabled.
  • Penalty Factor: Your base score is reduced based on your misses and incorrect responses. The fewer mistakes you make, the less penalty you receive.
  • N-Level Bonus: In Classic mode, higher N-levels give you a difficulty multiplier of 1.5^(N-1). So N=2 gives 1.5×, N=3 gives 2.25×, and so on.
  • Accuracy Multiplier: Your final score is scaled by your accuracy percentage.
  • Stimuli Bonus: Using more stimuli types gives you a multiplier: 0.5× for one, 1× for two, 1.25× for three, or 1.5× for four stimuli.

Research suggests that consistent, regular practice yields the best results:

  • Recommended: 15-25 minutes per day, 4-5 days per week
  • Minimum: 20 minutes, 3 times per week to see improvement
  • Studies: Most research showing cognitive gains used 4-5 weeks of consistent training

Use the streak system to build a consistent habit. Even short daily sessions are better than long, infrequent ones.
